The Rode NTG Shotgun Microphone is a reliable, high-quality microphone that offers a range of features designed to give you control over your audio recording. Whether you’re recording voiceovers, filming interviews, or capturing audio on set, this microphone is a solid choice.

I needed a microphone for my video production and especially with social distancing I’m not using lav mics so a shotgun microphone is a great choice. I will explain why I went specifically for RODE NTG.

If you’re in the market for a new microphone for your video production needs, the Rode NTG Shotgun Microphone might just be the perfect fit for you. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the unboxing and review of this microphone, highlighting its features and performance.

Why Choose the Rode NTG Shotgun Microphone?

The Rode NTG Shotgun Microphone is a versatile tool that offers full control over your audio recording. It’s designed with a host of features that make it a game-changer for video producers. The microphone has an impressive battery life, with some users reporting up to 30 hours of use without charging.

One of the standout features of the Rode NTG is its automatic on/off function. When you plug the microphone into your DSLR and turn on the camera, the microphone starts by itself. Similarly, when you turn off the DSLR, the microphone automatically turns off, saving you from worrying about running out of battery.

RODE NTG microphone can be put on top of the camera as it has a hot shoe mount but also you can put it on the stand if you buy an extension of the RØDE cable.

And by the way, don’t use just any jack extension, use RODE one, otherwise, you might get unwanted noise in the recording.

The main features of RØDE NTG microphone

The Rode NTG microphone comes with an adjustable gain wheel, giving you full control over your audio levels. It also features a high-pass filter, high-frequency boost, and a safety channel. The safety channel allows you to record into two channels, with the right one being the same amount as the left, minus 20 dB. This feature is particularly useful when you’re recording in a loud environment, as it helps prevent audio clipping.

The microphone is also designed to be less sensitive to sounds coming from the side and behind, making it a great choice for recording clear, focused audio.

  • Revolutionary acoustic design, delivering unmatched acoustic transparency and a natural, uncoloured sound.
  • Unique infinitely variable gain control for perfect recording levels.
  • Digital switching – controls high-pass filter, pad, high-frequency boost, and safety channel.
  • Internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 30+ hours of operation, and charges via USB-C.
  • Auto-sensing 3.5mm output works seamlessly with both cameras and mobile devices.
  • Also a fully featured USB microphone with headphone output.

Testing the Rode NTG Shotgun Microphone

In a test recording with an open window in the background, the Rode NTG performed impressively. The low cut setting and high pass filters worked effectively to reduce background noise and enhance the clarity of the spoken word.

The microphone also allows for real-time monitoring of the audio, either through a connected laptop or by plugging headphones directly into the microphone. This feature is incredibly useful for ensuring your audio levels are just right during recording.

It’s a super-cardioid microphone, sometimes it’s called short shot gun, which means it’s less sensitive to sounds coming from the side and behind. I’m not 100% convinced on this feature but see more in my video:
