Instagram Highlight allows you to organise selected Stories and display them directly on your Instagram profile. They are useful for keeping important videos and pictures easy to find instead of letting them disappear from view after being posted as Stories.
Creating an Instagram Highlight is simple, but you need to start from the correct place inside the Instagram app. Here is how to create an Instagram Highlight, choose its cover and edit it later.
Highlights Can Only Be Created From Stories
The most important thing to understand is that Instagram Highlights can only contain content that has been posted as an Instagram Story.
When you create a Highlight, Instagram will show you your previous Stories. Most of your past Stories should be available, although you might not see every Story you have ever posted.
You cannot upload a picture or video directly into a Highlight if it has never been shared as a Story. You will need to post it as a Story first. After that, you can return to your Highlight, add the Story and save the changes.
How to Create an Instagram Highlight
Step 1: Open Your Instagram Profile
Open Instagram and tap your profile picture to visit your profile.
This step is important because you need to use the plus button on your profile page. If you tap the plus button from the Instagram homepage, you will not see the option to create a Highlight.
Step 2: Tap the Plus Button
Once you are on your Instagram profile, tap the plus button.
Instagram will show you several content options. Select Highlight.
You will then be taken to a page containing your previous Instagram Stories.
Step 3: Select Your Stories
Scroll through your past Stories and tap the pictures or videos you want to include in the Highlight.
You can select one Story or combine several Stories that relate to the same subject. For example, you could create separate Highlights for tutorials, behind-the-scenes content, services, frequently asked questions or different projects.
Once you have selected everything you want to include, tap Next.
Step 4: Choose a Short Highlight Name
Give your Highlight a name that clearly explains what people will find inside it.
Try to keep the name short. Longer names can get cut off when they appear on your Instagram profile, making them harder to understand.
A short and specific name usually works better than a long description.
Make Your Instagram Highlight Content Worth Watching
Creating a Highlight only takes a few taps. The harder part is knowing whether the videos inside it are clear, engaging and helping your profile.
If you feel like your videos could be better but you cannot identify what is wrong, this is something I look at through my content review service. I review what is working, what is not working, why it is happening and what you can change. The review also includes content ideas, strategy and equipment advice for social media videos, podcasts or other video and audio content. Get more info here.
A Highlight can make useful content easier to find, but the content itself still needs to give people a reason to keep watching.
Step 5: Edit the Highlight Cover
Before publishing the Highlight, tap Edit Cover.
Choose a picture that represents the content inside the Highlight and looks good on your profile. You can reposition the image and zoom in until it fits properly inside the circular cover.
Once you are happy with the name and cover, tap Add.
Step 6: Refresh Your Instagram Profile
After creating the Highlight, refresh your Instagram profile.
Your new Highlight should now appear underneath your profile information. Tap it to check that the correct Stories have been added and that they appear in the order you expected.
How to Create Another Instagram Highlight
After creating your first Highlight, you should see a New button beside it on your Instagram profile.
Tap New whenever you want to create another Highlight. You can then select more Stories, choose a name, edit the cover and add it to your profile.
How to Edit an Existing Instagram Highlight
You do not need to delete a Highlight if you want to change it.
Tap and hold the Highlight you want to update. Instagram will display an option to edit that specific Highlight.
From there, you can change the Stories included in it, update the name or choose a different cover.
This is also how you can add a new Story to a Highlight you have already created.
What to Remember
To create an Instagram Highlight, always begin from your Instagram profile rather than the homepage.
Tap the plus button, select Highlight and choose the Stories you want to include. Keep the Highlight name short, select a clear cover and refresh your profile after publishing it.
Remember that a picture or video must first be posted as a Story before it can be added to a Highlight. Once the Highlight has been created, you can edit it at any time by tapping and holding it on your profile.
